Violence, Non-Violence, and Weight Loss... Lessons from the Dalai LamaLast month I was privileged to attend an address by the Dalai Lama, Tibet's Spiritual Leader and one of the world's greatest living teachers of peace. I was fascinated by the calm and grounded way he held the stage before a captivated audience of almost 20,000 - individuals of various backgrounds, ethnicities, ages, religions and social status - discussing issues such as compassion, peace, respect for all, secular ethics, and hope amidst what he calls a "century of war."
Throughout his talk, he referred often to violent and non-violent behavior, which shed new light for me on the search for peace, joy, healing, vitality, and even weight loss. (read more...) |
Sleep... Can it actually help us in the battle of the bulge?Husband to wife: "I was going to wake up and go jogging today, but my toes voted against me 10 to 1"
(Above joke referenced from cartoon by Randy Glasbergen)
Now, before you ditch your gym bag and hit the snooze button, know that regular exercise is an essential component to your overall physiological and emotional well-being at a multitude of levels. So, not to be cast aside, exercise needs to be partnered with both a healthy nutritional program and a regular sleep regime of 7-9hrs/night. So if at 5am, you've had your 8hrs of sleep and are ready to to hit the gym, then by all means go for it! If not however, it may be wise to get a few extra zzz's and hit the gym or your favorite running trail at lunch or after work.
Research shows that adequate and consistent amounts of sleep are instrumental in regulating hormones that help with a variety of issues such as mental clarity and memory; tissue repair, growth and healing; the building of muscle and bone; fat storage and breakdown; our immune system; and even controlling our appetite, hunger, and the kinds of foods we crave.

Healthy Balance with Seasonal FareBy Jenelle Kitto, RHN
The most important thing to consider when making healthy food choices is "quality," not "quantity." The food industry has invested millions of dollars into the marketing and advertising low-calorie, low-fat foods, yet at the cost of nutrition. A 100 calorie serving of vegetables is Nutrient Dense, providing valuable vitamins, minerals and fiber to nourish the body. A 100 calorie "snack pack" of cookies and crackers is filled with white sugar, white flour, hydrogenated oils, preservatives and excess salt. These processed foods are what we call Empty Calories. They tend to rob us of nutrition vs. providing it.
As winter begins to wrap her cold arms around us, the body craves comfort foods and warm hearty dishes. Sunlight hours begin to diminish and the Calgarian mind starts to think. Top 3 Health Concerns in November: - Staying Healthy This Flu Season - SAD (Seasonal Affected Disorder) - Weight Management over the Holiday Season Your best defense-Mother Nature. She provides us with the right nutrient-dense foods that also help prepare us for the above seasonal health concerns.

Inspired Living... Celebrating Members:

Catherine Munro
Single mother of two grown daughters, President of "In Quiet Company", and Reiki Master, Catherine is a woman with a lot on the go!
With her daughters now both out of the house and in university, Catherine is adjusting to the new emptiness in the home, and is beginning to notice, and even celebrate, just how un-lonley being alone can be!
Catherine's reflections:
Alone can be very appealing - all of my energy belongs to me, to do what I will. Rather than dispersing it to others, I can draw upon all of the resources for myself. I have a power surge - that may be frightening at first and even make me feel off-kilter and disoriented - what to do with all of the excess? But once I realize it belongs and is part of me, I can take the reigns, the power is exhilarating and the possibilities are endless. It is a power surge of immense proportions and will carry me far.
Lonely thoughts
douse the fire inside - they quell any surges and keep power at bay. As soon as I turn on the light (positive thoughts of aloneness above) the energy and power can begin to flow and the thrill of possibility is set free.
Catherine, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us... they are rich in gifts.
